“My Garden of a Thousand Bees,” “Green Planet” lead Wildscreen awards noms

Wildscreen has unveiled the nominees for the 40th edition of the Wildscreen Panda Awards, which honor the best in natural world storytelling from around the world. Leading the nominees with five nods is the feature documentary My Garden of a Thousand Bees (pictured), in which filmmaker Martin Dohrn chronicles the growth and development of the bees in his garden during the early COVID-19 lockdown. Produced by Passion Planet, the film is nominated in the Behaviour, Editing, Producer/Director, Scripted Narrative and Sound categories.

Conservation Successes Featured at the 2022 Smithsonian Folklife Festival

A highlight of “Earth Optimism × Folklife” is the outdoor screening of the one-hour documentary film, My Garden of a Thousand Bees. Taking refuge from the pandemic, acclaimed wildlife filmmaker Martin Dohrn sets out to record the incredible variety of wild bees in his small urban garden. The film is a production of Passion Planet, the WNET Group and HHMI Tangled Bank Studios in association with Ammonite Films. The screening is presented by HHMI Tangled Bank Studios, a mission-driven production company dedicated to crafting compelling, immersive films about science and scientists.

“The first film of our season was called My Garden of a Thousand Bees, and it came out of COVID,” he explains. “Wildlife macro photographer, Martin Dorn, who lives in Bristol, England, has extraordinary lenses and rigs where he shoots insects. And because he couldn’t go out and he couldn’t travel, he decided, ‘I want to shoot the bees in my garden. I’ve always been interested in them and now I have the time to actually spend to film them.’”
